The Clumber Spaniel:  A Noble and Affectionate Companion

The Clumber Spaniel holds the distinction of being the largest and heaviest of the AKC flushing spaniels. Historically celebrated as a "retired gentleman's shooting dog," these methodical and quiet hunters were specifically engineered to plow through dense underbrush. Sturdy and low-built, they typically stand 17 to 20 inches tall and weigh anywhere from 55 to 85 pounds.

History

• Royal Roots: Tracing its origins back to France over two centuries ago, the breed was ultimately formalized in England. It derives its name from Clumber Park, the expansive 4,000-acre estate of the Duke of Newcastle, who actively championed them.

• Royal Fanbase: The breed's popularity surged during the late 19th century, aided significantly by King Edward VII, who famously bred them.

• Exercise: Despite their working background, they require significantly less rigorous exercise than other spaniels, though daily walks remain essential to prevent weight gain.
